Sweets, Snacks and People

I love sweets and snacks and eat way too many of them. Dark chocolate tops my list of favorites by way more than a mile, and I'd rather eat dessert than a delicious meal any time. So it's no surprise that certain people in my life are associated with sweets and snacks, and when I see or hear about these items, I think about those people.

My husband = Mountain Dew
My son = Tostitos
My daughter = Doughnuts
My dad = Circus peanuts (yeah, those weird orange things)
My mom = Jelly beans
My grandpa = Chocolate covered cherries
My father-in-law = Snickers

For instance, when I'm walking my dog and see a discarded Mountain Dew can, I think about my husband. And then I pick up the can and toss it in a recycling container because people shouldn't litter. Hopefully it wasn't my husband. Or when I sashay through the candy aisle at our local Fleet Farm, I catch a glimpse of circus peanuts and it's like my dad is standing right next to me.

So, you get the picture. If I added myself to the list, dark chocolate M&Ms would be behind my name. And now that I think about it, M&Ms end up in every middle grade story I write. No coincidence there whatsoever, I'm sure.

So what about you? Do foods remind you of people? What food goes behind your name?

  1. Well, then, I love your dad the most. Because, um, CIRCUS PEANUTS, y'all?? A fun post.

  2. My daughter loves dark chocolate too. I live snickers like your father-in-law. And yes, I love sweets too much.

  4. That's funny! I've had characters in my own books eating chocolate candy. Love dark chocolate, although when I was young it was milk chocolate all the way. My tastes have definitely changed. Sweet post, Barbara!

  7. Hello? There are dark chocolate M&M's???? Not in Canada. I'll have to get some the next time I'm in the US. I love dark chocolate...just not too dark.

  8. What fun associations! Food never reminds me of people, but I think that's because I'm a picky eater and therefore not into food much. XD

  9. I have to say that I don't really have food and people associations. For me I am more apt to associate people or times with certain songs. I'm sure there is some psychological reason for that! :) Loved your list, though!

  10. I guess for me it would be pie -- almost any kind -- something I don't have often. No more than a couple times a year. But I do love it. You read my manuscript, Barbara. There was pie all over it.

  11. I realize I do this too. My best friend's mom always has bowls of M&Ms at her house- so I think of her whenever I see them. I think of my best friend when I see Swedish Fish because she ate them all the time when we lived together. The list goes on. So fun to think about. Enjoy your dark chocolate M&Ms. :)

  12. It is interesting that some things just remind you of people in your life. Can't beat a package of M&Ms for treats. Now I'll think of you every time I see one.

  13. I always see people in colors. M&Ms were always my go too food. I'd give them to anyone who was sick, or had just had a baby, or pretty much any reason I could think of.

  14. We eat anything and everything around here. The variety doesn't lend itself to food names. I suppose we go in cycles. One month, we're all about sweets, the next it's chips and popcorn. Then we go on a healthy binge and eat salad and fruit for days on end. Personally, I like gummy bears and fruit chews a lot lately, but I don't think I'd want to attach my name to them.

  15. Fun post! My husband also loves anything dark chocolate - I love anything chocolate. I also put food in my stories. One of my characters is going through a growing spurt and food is always on her mind. In another a brownie recipe sneaked into my manuscript.

  16. I don't think I put foods to people, but definitely smells--especially laundry detergent smells.

  17. You know, I don't actually think of people in relation to food, except for cheese of course. Cheese will forever be symbolic of my special needs brother. I think of people more in melodies. Is that strange? Like I could totally pick out a song for any personality under the sun, but don't ask me about foods. =)

  18. I've never thought about people in relation to food, but I love the idea. It occurred to me that for my kids, coffee probably represents me.

  19. OH yes I'm a dark chocolate fan, too. My current favorite is Lindt black currant dark chocolate. My husband is a Mountain Dew man too! My dad loves chocolate oranges, though I haven't found one to give him in years.

  20. There are actually M&Ms and Kit Kat in my WIP.

    But Marcia = Ice Cream.

However, I love dark chocolate and caramel, and my favorite candy bar is actually Milky Way.

You know: we need to do this for our characters.

  21. What a great idea for a post. I saw a maple Bun candy bar in a specialty food store the other day .I hadn't seen this candy for,oh, 30+ years and had a pang of sadness for my mom because it was her favorite candy when we were young. I think I could come up with lots of food-people associations. I think ice cream would be behind my name.
